Cyclone Murasu Makes Landfall in Andhra Pradesh: Heavy Rainfall, Strong Winds and IMD Alerts Across India

India's eastern coastline is facing challenging weather conditions as Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu made landfall along the south Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3, 2026. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin provided, the cyclone crossed the coast between Nellore and Narasapur, near Ongole, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall.

The storm has affected several parts of southern and eastern India, raising concerns about flooding, agricultural losses and disruption to normal activities. Although the cyclone is expected to weaken gradually after landfall, heavy rainfall and strong winds may continue to create difficulties in inland regions

Cyclone Murasu Landfall: Wind Speed and Current Position

According to the supplied IMD update, Cyclone Murasu crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast with sustained wind speeds of approximately 100–110 kmph and gusts reaching 120 kmph.

Before landfall, the system moved northwestwards over the Westcentral and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal. After crossing the coast, it continued moving north-northwestwards while gradually losing intensity.

The weather department indicated that the system could weaken into a cyclonic storm by the afternoon and further downgrade into a deep depression by midnight. However, weakening wind speeds do not immediately eliminate the risk of heavy rainfall, flooding and localised damage.

Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Several States

The cyclone's influence extends beyond Andhra Pradesh, with different states experiencing varying levels of rainfall and adverse weather conditions.

1. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam

Coastal Andhra Pradesh has experienced the direct impact of the cyclone. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been reported in several locations. According to the supplied information, some areas, including Bapatla, recorded exceptionally high rainfall totals of approximately 22–27 cm. Low-lying areas may face waterlogging and flash-flood risks.

2. Telangana and Rayalaseema

Heavy rainfall may affect parts of Telangana and Rayalaseema. Water accumulation in agricultural fields and low-lying settlements remains a concern. Farmers should postpone harvesting and other outdoor activities during adverse weather.

3. Odisha and Chhattisgarh

Southern Odisha and parts of Chhattisgarh may receive heavy rainfall due to the interaction between the cyclone's outer circulation and regional weather systems.

4. Tamil Nadu and Kerala

Several southern districts may experience rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds. Residents should follow local weather warnings and avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions.

IMD Advisory for Farmers and Fishermen

The IMD and disaster management authorities have issued safety advisories for affected regions.

Farmers should take the following precautions:

  • Ensure proper drainage in low-lying agricultural fields.

  • Protect harvested paddy, cotton and maize from rainwater.

  • Cover stored agricultural produce with waterproof tarpaulins.

  • Provide support to vulnerable banana and papaya plants.

  • Avoid spraying pesticides and fertilisers during rainfall and strong winds.

  • Monitor crop damage and follow local agricultural department instructions.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into rough sea conditions in the Westcentral and Southwest Bay of Bengal during the warning period.

Delhi-NCR Weather: Pleasant Conditions Continue

While southern India faces cyclone-related weather disturbances, Delhi-NCR is experiencing comparatively stable conditions. The supplied forecast indicates mainly clear skies with morning mist.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain around 27°C–30°C, while minimum temperatures may range between 14°C and 17°C.

What Happens Next?

As Cyclone Murasu weakens after landfall, attention will shift towards flood management, drainage operations, restoration of essential services and agricultural damage assessment. Even after the system loses its cyclonic intensity, its remaining circulation may continue producing rainfall in several inland areas.

Residents, farmers and travellers should regularly check official IMD bulletins and district-level alerts before making weather-related decisions.

Cyclone Murasu's landfall in Andhra Pradesh has brought strong winds and heavy rainfall across parts of southern and eastern India. Although the system is expected to weaken gradually, the possibility of flooding and further rainfall remains a concern. Timely precautions, accurate weather information and coordinated disaster management are essential to minimise damage.
